Gundam Wing Fanfic Recs

I've been rewatching Gundam Wing this past week and have started to feel that niggling itch to read some fanfic, maybe look at some fanart, but I hadn't really decided to do it yet until later, when I'm further along. Well, yesterday I was using this Firefox plug-in that opens random bookmarks in the tab, and after a while of using that a Gundam Wing fanfic showed up. It's 1x2 and I wasn't really in the mood, so I clicked the Gundam Wing button and was just kind of poking around until I came across this fic. I don't even remember the summary, so I don't know if it drew me in or what, but I clicked on a whim and haven't stopped reading until just a while ago!
I've read the pairing before with good results, so that probably helped a lot. If done well, any pairing can be gold. But this fic is certainly not (just) a pairing fic. The plot in this is just mind-blowing! And it involves a lot of people, not just the pilots and Preventers. The characterizations are nothing less than perfect, and the deep insights into them and their situations are astounding. I love all the details and how they flow so easily in this style. I do have to admit that my favorite part was the interactions between Zechs and Duo, so I found myself skipping 'set-up' chapters to get back to them. XD I love the subtle ways the author slips in the pairing set-up, it makes me want to write something where the characters don't just fall in love so easily. It's so much better this way sometimes, because they work hard for it and grow so much (and together)! I can't wait to read the next installment. Trapped in an abusive relationship, a young man is unexpectedly awakened to his past and he begins the struggle to gain back what was unjustly taken from him.
O-owie. *sniffle* This author is so amazing at plot and depth of emotion that really draws one in. I've noticed with all of her fics that Bane's Desire is really great with description, although sometimes it can get hard to read when it's in blocks. That's an issue with format though, not the writing! I'm impressed with how she wrote everyone. This takes place a few years after the war, and it's brilliant how she wrote everyone's growth. Interesting and sad in equal measure due to the circumstances. The idea (the title may give some clue) is really unique, and gods, when you learn more about it and what happened...it makes you so emotional. @__@ I found myself feeling a deep sadness at times, not only for the characters but at the thought of it happening to anyone. Duo is brilliant in this, it's truly amazing how he changes throughout the fic. You think you know what's going to happen, but nothing is clear cut in real life so it should reflect that in fiction. The plot twists reminds you of that change is a fact of life, never is set in stone. And sometimes you have to be happy with what you can have rather than what you've lost... (Oh, and it was fun naming the pairings. I didn't want to spoil anything, but I wanted to let people know what to expect...but I also worry that people won't give it a chance if they don't like one of the pairings. Quatre's used to being underestimated, but that doesn't mean he likes it. Walking off his frustration from the day, he ends up teaching a group of kidnappers that appearances can be deceiving and sometimes the bird in the hand is more dangerous to have.
Takes place sometime after the war when the pilots have settled down (as much as they can) and is in Quatre's POV. I quite like Quatre in this, he's not infallible, he's still learning, he's still got pieces of the past left with him, and most of all, he can handle himself even outside of a Gundam. I also like Heero in this. Their relationship is cozy and not in your face sap. It feels so equal and loving without blatantly pointing it out. (Heero x Quatre, implied Duo x Hilde) (PG-13)

Five years after the war, the Gundam Wing boys gather for a special occasion... much to Duo's surprise. Wufei comes to an epiphany and acts on it, much to Wufei's surprise.
Going in, I had no idea what to expect. Here, I have to berate myself for judging a story by what I think it'll be like. Turns out it's one of my favorite 02x05 stories now, it's so good. The opening is a great hook, and quite amusing. Love Heero's part in this, it's nice to imagine him like that. One major thing I was happy about was Duo's characterization. He's not a spaz, or slutty, or an eternally joking/laughing idiot. He's, well...like he is in the series. I liked that he still couldn't let the war completely go even after five years. I love the whole kitchen scene, I think I'm like Duo in the 'experiment with foods' aspect. XP Though I'd never put blueberries in anything, despite my liking of the flavor. I also like Wufei's characterization; I was so happy that the author included Meiran. She had such a profound effect on Wufei, she deserves to be at least mentioned. I wasn't sure where the graphic fit in, but by the end I get where it's from and it's awesome. One last thing: I think the little Japanese there was was not needed, or at least it could have been spelled right. (Duo x Wufei, Trowa x Quatre, past Wufei x Meiran) (PG-13)

It all started with the the words "Prove it". Those words allowed Heero and Duo to meet for the first time, the end of Duo's solitude and the beginning of friendship and much more.
"Chance" is Duo and Heero's get together, whereas "Take a Chance" was Quatre and Trowa's. It's really interesting to read Duo and Heero's POV on them, I wish I could read more stories like that. You don't have to read "Take a Chance" to understand "Chances". The plot twists in this this are interesting! Duo as a dancer is cool, and I like Meiran as his friend/dance partner. Only annoying thing was the use of "koi". I could deal with the occasional Japanese term (the author made it fit in this 'verse), but "koi" is one that I have a hard time forgiving as a term of endearment, as I doubt real Japanese people do it. Modern...romance? ...Hm, now that I think about it, a reincarnation fic would be really awesome. Anyway! I love the characters in this fic (despite there being no Duo and Wufei in this one - they're in the 'sequel'). It's awesome that the author included (twelve) of Quatre's sisters and his mom. And dad, even though he's a jerkwad. I love Heero and Trowa's relationship here! And that Quatre was 'let in' as a member of their little family. And their mom is really cool. Quatre's curses crack me up though. xD Quite a happy fic despite a few angsty moments. Next: Chances (Trowa x Quatre) (NC-17)

I haven't thought about this pairing in...a long, long time. That's probably what got me to give this fic a chance despite the OOC summary. This is a great HS AU! The idea is actually IC in this story. I like Quatre here, he's no simpering uke. I also liked Heero, and the end was nice. Oh! Also loved everyone else. I wouldn't have minded reading more in this 'verse. (High School AU) (Heero x Quatre) (PG-13)
(Votes: 1) - All Through The Night by Honor [Excerpt] - While holed up in a safehouse, Duo makes the decision to help Wufei, who is having nightmares due to his colony/clan's recent destruction.
You don't have to read Persistence to understand this. I didn't, but from the summary, it's the story of how Trowa and Quatre got together. "All Through the Night" is pretty much TWT/AU. Also, Meiran is not mentioned. It has the occasional grammar error (a letter left off of a weird, or no punctuation), and is OOC, but not in a 'Duo is a slut, Quatre is a weak uke, Heero is weepy, etc' kind of way. I enjoyed this fic, but I can also say it wasn't my favorite. I kind of wished that it had been Duo x Wufei x Heero, but I stopped wishing for that halfway through. If you actually like Relena, you might not like this fic. It isn't so bad at the end (especially the underwear model part, haha), but she's still not portrayed in the best light here. All that said, I liked it enough to rec. It was funny and I like the relationship they all have together. (Duo x Wufei, Trowa x Quatre) (PG-13)

Weird how simple this is, but definitely amusing. Heero's surprise cracked me up, and Duo's thoughts on it. Relena and Hilde are cute here, they come off as the teenagers they should be. (Duo x Heero & Hilde x Relena) (PG)

Definitely my absolute favorite fic for this pairing, and do I dare say, probably the best out there. It's ruined all other Dorothy x Relena fics for me. I was surprised at first to find that it was multi-chaptered - never expected to find a fic as long as this for them. Even more amazingly, it has plot and character growth. I felt such pure elation as I read Relena and Dorothy growing together later in the fic. Oh god, but earlier in the fic? I can't believe how much I was ranting aloud at the screen at the people around Relena. Angriest I've been in a while - it's so weird being angry at fictional characters for the sake of a fictional character, let me tell you. This fic made me love those two girls dearly. It made me want what they have for myself, and I treasure any fic that can make me feel like that. As I read, I felt more and more that that Dorothy and Relena were Yin and Yang, two sides of a coin. Only Dorothy saw Relena for who she really was, who she could become, while everyone else was so blind. I loved how some chapters were in other character's POV, it didn't detract from the main character, Relena, and her relationship with Dorothy at all, only added to the overall plot. I have to mention that I just loved the first time for Relena. First experience in a relationship and intimacy. Reading her discovering herself and Dorothy is something that'll stick with me for a while. When you get the end, there's this place that seems like the perfect stopping point, but there's a little section added anyway. It's beyond words how hilarious it is. XD Also, totally read the omake. Pure, unadulterated crack. And totally side-splitting. (Dorothy x Relena, Heero x Relena, Zechs x Noin, Trowa x Quatre, Duo x Hilde, Wufei x Heero in the omake) (R+)

I could really see this happening, so easily. ♥ I've always loved reading about Quatre and Trowa's music making, but having Duo (my favorite) as the main character topped the cake! I really like the author's version of Duo - too often the other side of him is not written - the solider. Yet he's also still his usual self here, and I love it. XD (Duo main) (G)

Delay of Game by Lukoni [Excerpt] - Trowa goes to Heero's house for the Hockey game, a regular event these days. Unfortunately, he is wearing his Preventer uniform at the wrong time, as some 'thugs' are waiting for him inside. Heero manages to convince them that Trowa is not a Preventer.... and that he is in face, Heero's boyfriend! After a thorough strip and search, Trowa is told to stay in the kitchen while Heero finishes his business with the men. Trowa is not happy. Missing his game and annoyed at his now cold Chinese he'd brought, he doesn't even get peace and quiet. Instead, the thug who is watching him seems to have many questions about what being a 'fag' is like. Trowa thinks that he's going to pay Heero back dearly, but changes his mind in the end.
I haven't read GW since forever, *especially* 3x1. I'm really glad that the first fic back into the fandom was so good. And very, very funny. I love Trowa's lines, just...wicked. I somehow liked the whole Thug + Trowa thing. It was amusing and kind of interesting that the guy chose to ask all those questions while he had the chance. =P I thought Heero was a bit OOC there in the end, but it was a really sweet fic that could have turned sour if it got longer trying to explain Heero's feelings. Kudos to Lukoni for pulling it off with aplomb. Actually, I wish it had been longer, because the author gave Trowa some interesting hobbies that i'd like to read more about. - Happy Heero, Monotone Duo! by LeoOsaka [Excerpt] - Imagine if you were to wake up in someone else's body. Now imagine Duo waking up in Heero's body, and Heero in Duo's. It'd be pure chaos if the two weren't, surprisingly, pretty good actors. However, the more time goes by in each other's bodies, the harder it is to pretend, especially when half the household and more found out, Quatre thinks they're gay because of a slipup, and worst of all - Relena shows up to stalk "Heero", and Duo has some... plans for her up his sleeves. It's not all fun and games. Duo and Heero are learning a lot about each other and realizing some things they never thought about before. I love it because it made me laugh so hard, but it also made me happy and think about how they must be feeling. This is truly a great read, and I can't wait for the next chapter to come out! - The Right Way by Adire [Excerpt] - Even though Heero is a cold, unfeeling and unloving human, Duo loves him, so he submits to him. One night, Heero tells Duo he won't be sleeping in Duo's room for that night. Duo wants to know why, but Heero won't tell him. They fight and Heero storms out. Heero goes to the deck where Wufei is watching the sky and they talk for a few moments until suddenly Heero attacks Wufei. Wufei has "denied himself a man's pleasure"for so long that he doesn't resist (besides trying to be dominate) against Heero's menstruations. Later on that night, Wufei tries to get into Duo's room, but the door is locked and no one answers. Wufei busts in, only to discover a bloodied Duo sprawled on the floor with a gash on his wrist. Duo is taken to a hospital. Wufei is very angry with Heero, calling him a murderer and saying he had no honor for pushing a person to suicide. Heero shows a small sign of guilt. Wufei and Heero fight, Quatre being useless to stop it and Trowa in an odd state. Later, Heero visits the hospital and admits his thoughts to a sleeping Duo. Duo hears him and tells him to never hurt him again. Heero is afraid of loving, when his job is to kill people, but he's willing to try. Wufei walks in, and Heero, who is able to observe more than he ever had before, sees the envy and loneliness in Wufei's eyes. Duo then makes a suggestion that surprises Wufei and Heero both. Heero thinks that with Wufei there too, he might be able to get through learning to love easier. What does Wufei think? (Heero x Duo, Heero x Wufei, Heero x Duo x Wufei, Trowa x Quatre) (R)

On the way home from work, preparing to propose to Heero, he sees Heero and Wufei at his favorite restaurant. He gets a nasty shock when they kiss. He packs his bags and moves to New York and starts his life over. However, two years later brings back memories as his old teammates start appearing, along with Zechs who seems mutually attracted to Duo.
